The famous bicerin of Turin

While the Olympics have been bringing Turin to the world's attention, chocolate has been a very large feature in the Olympic attendees (non-competitors) diet.

The first chocolate bar was created in Turin in 1802, and ever since Turin has made it one of their specialties to make, eat and display some of the best chocolate in the world.

In fact, in Turin you can purchase something called a Choco Pass. For 15 euros you can walk around Turin with a map, calling in at 23 shops for chocolate treats. It just doesn't get any better for chocoholics than this.

But one of the many many memories people will have of attending the 2006 Winter Olympics must be the bicerin. Hot espresso, dark chocolate and fresh cream in a glass (the exact recipe however is a closely guarded secret).

Dating back to the mid 1800's bicerin could originally be bought in three main varieties: pur e fior (coffee & milk), pur e barba (coffee & chocolate) and un po'd tut (coffee, chocolate & milk).

Today the bicerin is served in most of the cafés in Turin, but with a history dating back to 1763 the most famous place to seek out the bicerin is at the appropriately named Caffè Al Bicerin .
