Who made Willy Wonka's river of chocolate?
If you want to continue to believe that the river in the latest film version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is real chocolate then read no further...
Just how much chocolate was used to make the chocolate river in the film?
Well to ensure that they stayed with the original plot,
the film makers needed to recreate a chocolate waterfall and chocolate
river preferably without having to use a million litres
of real melted chocolate, or having to use digital effects.
After debating how to achieve an authentic looking chocolate river the studio turned to a Yorkshire company, Vickers Laboratories, to come up with a chocolate looking substance without using chemicals that might poison anyone swimming in it.
Using a top secret formula the team from Vickers Laboratories created over 1 million litres of very real looking chocolate liquid at Pinewood Studios and stored it in road tankers until it was needed.
Vickers Laboratories employs 22 people and has produced special effects items including fake blood for the films Band of Brothers and Troy, and more normal products such as sterile solutions for contact lenses and chemicals for school science lessons.
The result really does look good enough to eat, but the catch is that it tastes like water, every chocolate lovers nightmare.
